Thinking about lip fillers but not sure what to expect? You’re not alone — it’s one of the most searched-for treatments, and a little nerves beforehand is completely normal. This calm, honest guide walks you through whether it hurts, what happens on the day, how much swelling to expect, how long results last, and how to make sure your lips look natural.

The quick answer

Lip fillers are a quick treatment (around 45 minutes) using hyaluronic-acid filler to add shape, volume or definition to the lips. They’re numbed for comfort, last roughly six to twelve months, and can be dissolved if you change your mind. Some swelling in the first few days is normal, and your final result settles at about two weeks.

Do lip fillers hurt?

The lips are one of the more sensitive areas to treat, but modern technique makes it very manageable. A numbing cream is applied first, and most hyaluronic-acid fillers also contain a local anaesthetic that takes effect as the treatment begins. Most clients describe a sensation of pressure or a small pinchrather than real pain, and it’s over quickly.

On the day: what happens

Your appointment starts with a consultation to agree the shape and amount you’d like — this is the most important part, and there’s never any pressure to have more than you want. Your lips are then numbed, and the filler is carefully placed to build balance and definition. You’ll see the new shape straight away, though it will look fuller at first because of initial swelling.

Swelling and the first 72 hours

Expect your lips to be swollen, tender and possibly a little uneven for the first 24 to 72 hours— this is completely normal and not a reflection of the final result. A few tips help:

  • Sip water and avoid very hot drinks for the first day.
  • Keep the area clean and avoid lip products for 24 hours.
  • Avoid strenuous exercise, alcohol, saunas and flights for a day or two.
  • A cool (not frozen) compress can ease swelling — follow the aftercare you’re given.
  • Try not to judge your lips until the swelling has fully settled at around two weeks.

How long do lip fillers last?

Lip filler generally lasts six to twelve months. Because lips are constantly moving — talking, eating, smiling — they tend to break filler down a little faster than more static areas. Your metabolism, the product used and how much was placed all play a part. A top-up before it fully fades keeps your lips looking consistently lovely.

How to get a natural result

The secret to natural-looking lips is starting conservatively and building gradually. A 0.6ml refresh is a beautiful, low-commitment first step; you can always add more, but it’s harder to undo an overfilled look (though it can be dissolved). Choose an experienced practitioner who listens, respects your natural proportions and is honest about what will suit you.

Can they be dissolved?

Yes — one of the reassuring things about hyaluronic-acid fillers is that they can be dissolvedwith an enzyme injection if you’d like to reduce, reshape or remove them entirely. This makes lip filler a lower-risk way to try enhancement than more permanent options.
