Lip Blush Aftercare & Healing Guide: The Day-by-Day Stages
How long lip blush lasts, whether it hurts, and the day-by-day healing stages — a warm, honest aftercare guide from a Bracknell PMU artist.
Lip blush is one of the most rewarding semi-permanent makeup treatments — but the healing journey can catch first-timers by surprise. Your lips will look their boldest in the first few days, then go through several natural stages before the soft, healed colour blooms through. This guide walks you through exactly what to expect, day by day, so you can relax and heal beautifully.
The short version:lip blush typically lasts one to three years, the treatment is very manageable with numbing, and full healing takes around four to six weeks — with the surface settling in the first one to two weeks.
How long does lip blush last?
Lip blush usually lasts between one and three yearsbefore it needs refreshing, depending on your skin, lifestyle and how much sun exposure your lips get. It fades gradually and softly rather than disappearing suddenly, and a colour boost every 12–18 months keeps it looking its best. Factors that make it fade faster include sun exposure, smoking, exfoliating lip products and naturally oily or very warm skin.
Does lip blush hurt?
Most clients are pleasantly surprised. A strong numbing cream is applied before and during the treatment, so the sensation is usually described as light scratching or tingling rather than pain. Lips are sensitive, so you may feel more in some areas than others, and they’ll feel tender — a little like chapped lips — for a day or two afterwards.
The lip blush healing stages, day by day
Every set of lips heals slightly differently, but the journey usually follows this pattern:
- Days 1–2 — bold & swollen: Your lips look their most vivid and may feel puffy and tender. This is the colour at its most intense — don’t panic, it won’t stay this dark.
- Days 3–4 — tightness & peeling: The lips start to feel dry and tight, and a light flaking or peeling begins. It’s vital not to pick — let the flakes come away naturally.
- Days 4–7 — ghosting: As the top layer sheds, the colour can look surprisingly faint or patchy. This ‘ghosting’ phase is completely normal (more on it below).
- Weeks 2–6 — the bloom: The colour gradually resurfaces and evens out as the deeper layers heal, settling into your soft, natural result.
Lip blush aftercare: the essentials
Good aftercare protects both your comfort and your colour. Safina will give you personalised instructions, but the essentials usually include:
- Gently blot your lips as directed in the first hours to keep them clean and dry.
- Apply the aftercare balm you’re given, sparingly and with clean hands, to keep lips comfortable.
- Avoid makeup on the lips, spicy or salty foods, and hot drinks through a straw where possible for the first few days.
- Don’t pick or peel flaking skin — let it shed naturally to protect the colour.
- Avoid swimming, saunas, steam and intense exercise for about a week.
- Keep lips out of direct sun and use SPF once healed to preserve the colour.
What is the ‘ghosting’ phase?
Around days four to seven, many people worry their lip blush has ‘gone wrong’ because the colour looks so pale — sometimes almost invisible. This is ghosting, and it’s a completely normal part of healing. The fresh top layer of skin is temporarily masking the pigment underneath. Over the following weeks, as your skin continues to heal, the colour blooms back through. Try not to judge your result until at least four to six weeks.
Why the top-up matters
Lip blush is designed as a two-step process. Your first session lays down the base, and a top-up around four to six weeks later perfects the colour, evens out any areas that healed lighter, and boosts longevity. It’s an important part of getting the best, most even result — so do book it in.
